What is Open Sinus Lifting?
Open sinus lifting (lateral window technique) is a bone augmentation procedure applied in patients with insufficient bone height in the posterior upper jaw region. The maxillary sinus membrane is elevated and bone graft is placed in the created space to provide adequate bone volume for implants.
This technique is one of the most researched dental procedures that has been successfully applied since the 1980s. It is preferred when existing bone height is below 4-5 mm. In experienced hands, it has a success rate of over 95% and can provide large amounts of bone gain (10-15 mm).
Treatment Stages
3D Evaluation
Sinus anatomy, existing bone height, and membrane thickness are analyzed with computed tomography.
Lateral Window Opening
Gum flap is raised and an oval window is opened in the sinus lateral wall with special burs.
Membrane Elevation
Sinus membrane (Schneider membrane) is carefully separated from the bone and lifted upward with special instruments.
Graft Placement
Bone graft (autogenous, allogenic, or xenogenic) is placed in the created space and compacted.
Closure and Healing
Window is covered with membrane, flap is sutured. Implant is placed after 6-9 months of healing.
Open Sinus Lifting Types
Classic Lateral Window
Traditional technique, widest access and view. Ideal for large bone gains.
Piezoelectric Technique
Precise bone cutting with ultrasonic devices. Minimizes membrane perforation risk.
Balloon Technique
Membrane elevation with inflatable balloon. Less traumatic, low perforation risk.
Simultaneous Implant
If adequate primary stability exists, sinus lifting and implant are applied in the same session.
How Is It Done?
Open sinus lifting operation is performed under local anesthesia in sterile operating room conditions and takes 45-90 minutes.
