What is Membrane Treatment?

Membrane treatment is a barrier technique used in bone grafting procedures to protect the graft material and achieve guided bone regeneration (GBR). The membrane prevents fast-growing soft tissue cells from entering the graft area, prioritizing bone formation.

The GBR technique is a scientifically proven regenerative procedure that has been successfully applied since the 1980s. Membranes are produced in two main categories: resorbable (dissolving) and non-resorbable (needing removal). Modern collagen membranes are biocompatible and are naturally absorbed by the body.

Treatment Stages

1

Evaluation and Planning

The size and shape of the bone defect are evaluated. Appropriate membrane type and size are determined.

2

Graft Placement

Bone defect is filled with graft material and compacted.

3

Membrane Application

Barrier membrane is placed over the graft and positioned so that edges extend at least 2-3 mm over the bone.

4

Fixation

Membrane is fixed with titanium pins or sutures if necessary. Full coverage is ensured.

5

Primary Closure

Soft tissue is closed tension-free. Membrane exposure is prevented.

Membrane Treatment Types

Resorbable Membranes

Collagen-based membranes absorbed by the body in 4-6 months. No second surgery required. Brands like Bio-Gide, Jason.

Non-Resorbable Membranes

e-PTFE or titanium-reinforced membranes. Longer barrier function, but needs to be removed with second surgery.

Titanium-Reinforced Membranes

Shapeable titanium mesh structure. Ideal for space maintenance in large defects.

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)

Natural membrane obtained from patient's own blood. Contains growth factors, accelerates healing.

How Is It Done?

Membrane treatment is usually applied together with bone grafting and performed in the same surgical session.

Surgical site is anesthetized with local anesthesia and flap is raised
Bone defect is cleaned and graft material is placed
Membrane is opened in sterile environment and cut to appropriate size
Membrane is placed over graft, edges are fixed on bone
Soft tissue is closed tension-free and sutures are placed

Advantages

Significantly increases bone graft success rate
Prevents soft tissue invasion
Provides guided bone regeneration
Resorbable types do not require second surgery
Various size and shape options available
Made from biocompatible and safe materials
Increases implant success in the long term
Minimal complication risk

Disadvantages

Adds extra cost
Risk of membrane exposure (if soft tissue opens)
Non-resorbable types require second surgery
Correct application requires experience

Note: Most of these disadvantages can be minimized with proper planning and treatment by an experienced dentist.
