What is Bone Block Grafting?
Bone block grafting is an advanced bone augmentation technique applied in severe bone loss cases. In this method, bone blocks from the patient's own body (autogenous) or synthetic/cadaver-derived (allogenic/xenogenic) sources are screwed and fixed to the area with insufficient bone.
Block grafting is preferred especially in complex cases where horizontal and vertical bone loss occur together. It provides more volume gain compared to particulate grafts and creates a strong foundation for implant placement. The graft material fuses with the patient's own bone over time (remodeling).
Treatment Stages
Comprehensive Evaluation
The size and shape of bone loss is analyzed with 3D tomography. Donor site (jaw, hip, or tibia) is determined.
Donor Site Preparation
For autogenous graft, bone block is taken from jawbone (ramus, symphysis) or extraoral region.
Recipient Site Preparation
The area with bone loss is decorticated (cortical bone is perforated) and blood flow is ensured.
Block Graft Fixation
Bone block is fixed to the recipient site with titanium screws. Particulate graft and membrane are added if necessary.
Healing and Implant
After 4-6 months of healing, graft fuses with bone. Screws are removed and implant is placed.
Bone Block Grafting Types
Autogenous Block Graft
Bone taken from patient's own body. Highest success rate, fastest fusion. Can be taken from jaw, hip, or tibia.
Allogenic Block Graft
Processed bone block from human cadaver. No second surgery required, no limited volume disadvantage.
Xenogenic Block Graft
Processed bone block from bovine source. Biocompatible and safe, wide volume options available.
Synthetic Block Graft
Laboratory-produced bone-like material. Full biocompatibility, unlimited supply advantage.
