What is Gummy Smile Correction?

Gummy smile is when gums are excessively visible compared to normal ratio when smiling. Aesthetically, more than 2mm of gum visibility is defined as 'gummy smile.' This condition can arise from different causes such as genetics, bone structure, lip muscle activity, or tooth eruption anomalies.

Gum aesthetics (gingivoplasty/gingivectomy) is shaping excess gum tissue with laser or surgical methods. This procedure makes teeth appear longer and more proportionate. Thanks to modern laser technology, painless, bloodless, and fast-healing treatment is possible. In some cases, botox application may be an alternative.

Treatment Stages

1

Aesthetic Analysis

Smile analysis, gum-lip ratio and facial aesthetics are evaluated.

2

Cause Identification

Source of excess gum (bone, soft tissue, lip) is determined.

3

Treatment Plan

Ideal smile design is planned together with patient.

4

Gum Shaping

Excess tissue is removed with laser or surgical method.

5

Healing and Follow-up

Full healing within 1-2 weeks, follow-up examination is done.

Gummy Smile Correction Types

Laser Gingivectomy

Painless tissue shaping with diode laser. Most popular method.

Surgical Gingivectomy

Classic method with scalpel. For more comprehensive cases.

Bone Contouring

Surgical correction if underlying bone excess exists.

Botox Application

To reduce excessive lip muscle movement. Temporary solution.

How Is It Done?

Gum aesthetic procedure is usually completed in 30-60 minutes.

Digital smile analysis and planning is done
Local anesthesia is applied (minimal with laser)
Excess gum tissue is removed with laser/surgery
Gum line is arranged symmetrically
Protective recommendations are given, follow-up appointment is scheduled

Advantages

Immediately visible aesthetic result
Teeth appear longer and more proportionate
Painless and bloodless procedure with laser
Fast healing (1-2 weeks)
Permanent results
Completed in single session
Increases self-confidence
Can be combined with veneer/laminate treatments

Disadvantages

Temporary sensitivity after procedure
Bone surgery may be needed in some cases
Very rare chance of recurrence
Botox application is temporary (4-6 months)

Note: Most of these disadvantages can be minimized with proper planning and treatment by an experienced dentist.
